Vasai-Bhayandar: In a landmark development for Palghar district, the inaugural Ro-Ro (Roll on-Roll off) ferry service between Vasai and Bhayander has commenced operations on a pilot basis, offering both passengers and vehicles a convenient waterway commute. Covering a distance of 1.89 nautical miles or approximately 3.50 kilometers, this service is poised to revolutionize transportation in the region.
The Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB) spearheaded trial runs between the Vasai Fort jetty and the Bhayander West jetty, paving the way for the official launch. Operated by Suvarnadurg Shipping and Marine Services Pvt Ltd, the vessel ‘Janhvi’ will facilitate the ferry service, accommodating up to 100 passengers and 33 vehicles per journey.
With expectations high for easing traffic congestion and enhancing tourism prospects, the Ro-Ro ferry service holds promise for residents and visitors alike. The anticipated travel time of 15 minutes one-way across the water is projected to save motorists in the Vasai-Bhayander corridor approximately 50 minutes compared to traditional routes.
Shiv Sena Member of Parliament from Thane, Rajan Vichare, ceremoniously inaugurated the service, marking a significant milestone for the region’s transportation infrastructure. As crowds gathered at both jetties to witness the inaugural voyages, excitement permeated the air, with many eager to experience the scenic beauty of the Arabian Sea during their commute.
First and Last Service | Timings |

First and last service from Bhayander | 7.30 am and 7.30 pm |
However, amidst the optimism surrounding the new ferry service, concerns persist regarding its impact on daily commuters. While local fishing communities stand to benefit, regular office-goers may still contend with crowded trains and congested roads, prompting calls for broader infrastructure investments such as the metro project.
As the Ro-Ro ferry service sets sail, eyes remain fixed on its operational efficiency and impact on commuter patterns. Over the next three months, authorities will closely monitor the sailing route, passenger embarkation processes, and overall performance before a formal inauguration.
This initiative, part of the central government’s Sagarmala project aimed at bolstering domestic trade, underscores a broader commitment to enhancing connectivity and transportation networks across the country. With plans underway for additional passenger jetties in key locations, the Ro-Ro ferry service heralds a new era of maritime mobility in Palghar district and beyond. Stay tuned for further updates as this transformative journey unfolds.
